The possibilities of MvM as a stand alone game
I just wanted your opinions on if you thought MvM could be successful as a standalone game even branch off into it's own genre.

Everyone's probably heard of League of Legends and DoTA 2 and how immensely popular they've become. And the MOBA originally started as a subgenre of Starcraft (Aeon of Strife) and later Warcraft 3 (Defense of the Ancients)

MvM has it's own dedicated gamers who almost exclusively play MvM instead of actual PvP and from what I've seen are quite passionate about the gamemode.

I think it has enough depth to be successful, but it would require a company that is fully dedicated towards updates to keep it fresh, much like Riot Games does for LoL. MvM lacks the competitive part though that really keeps a game as exciting as MOBAs are. You would have to keep prize drops like Australiums in to keep the excitement level going.

I don't know if the player base is really big enough. I'd estimate the dedicated player base of MvM is no more than 8000 (kind of just a random guess)

I enjoy the other FPS games that have a 'zombie survival' mode and even used to play a lot of 'Tower Defense' in Warcraft 3. It's a genre that appeals to me. But they're always subgenres just subgenres.

Advantage: A standalone game would mean the company would only dedicate updates towards MvM and not duck journals or other ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Maybe the lack of competitive really holds this genre back from being a successful on its own.

people could stop playing mvm becasue they wouldnt get rewards they could use un tf2

Personally, I think it's amazing how TF2 has same classes and items that can work in two completely different game modes. When MvM came out, the 9 playable classes were already fleshed out with tons of interchangeable weapons and hats. And future updates for base TF2 also affect MvM, even if no one actually wants me to Air Strike soldier. Not to mention, as Big Daddy said, being able to bring MvM rewards back into TF2 is a big plus.

I would not want to see TF2 and MvM split into separate games, but I do feel your pain about it getting the short end of the update stick. It wouldn't be so bad if the PvP updates didn't constantly add bugs to MvM. :/

Yeah it is quite spectacular how well the two game modes work with the variety of classes and weapons and how weapons that seem quite useless in PvP end up being powerhouses in MvM (Hitmans Heatmaker and Soldier Banners)

I can understand people play for the loot to bring back and use in PvP but I was just wondering if people could see the genre becoming standalone in the way that MOBA became it's own thing. If a game company were to take the concept, make a standalone game with the depth of MvM and fully dedicate themselves to updating with new maps, new weapons, hell even new characters if they wanted to, I would jump on that train and never look back.

Also, even though Overwatch is the next big thing, I doubt it could work with a MvM gamemode since it's always set weaponry and abilities for each character. It would lack the depth

Ofcourse it could be a standalone game. This game formula have already been done before in other standalone games.

I'd be okay with this as long as you can still access your TF2 inventory and can choose to play the full MvM experience from the base TF2.
Oh wait.

MvM made me appreciate the Heatmaker so much that I use it as my main rifle in PvP too. (Okay I lied, the Love and War buff was what won me over...)

If it started with something as in-depth as current MvM, then I totally agree.

Overwatch has shamelessly ripped off taken enough inspiration from TF2 already that I am 100% sure they will add unlockable weapons eventually.
