If you're looking for a form of entertainment, Mann Up is fine.
You can apply this to any kind of gambling, by the way. There's a reason why it's considered a social activity, not a job.
Since you didn't specify Mann Up (although it is heavily implied): There are also custom MvM servers with entirely new missions on potato.tf that you can play for free.
The most you get out of a single mission is a random weapon and spending a dollar for that is just not very sensible.
Even if you complete a tour the rewards are not going to be nearly worth as much as what you invested into it.
Unless, of course, you get lucky enough. But its gambling and chances are higher to lose than to win.
You didnt specify what items you want but you can trade for a multitude of items by simply buying a key and trading that for refined should you be looking for cosmetics.
