I'd say that if a person has at least some basic/lower average skill at TF2 in general and has a willingness to learn, they should just hop into Two Cities, friends or not. Just be friendly and ask for advice and most people are willing to give it when they don't have to initiate the interaction. That's exactly how I got started and it worked wonderfully.
I myself is a kind of a newb, i'm not a pro at this mode, but i'll gladly take any advice players can give me.
This however is not the most ideal thing because then you may have trouble with tanks, considering you only have an engineer and demoman to deal big damage to tanks, due to 75% minigun resistance.
