hl2.exe not responding

team fortress 2 and garry's mod both crash and say that the hl2.exe is not working when i try to start the game and i have no idea why. i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and that didn't work. i tried verify-ing the cache and defragmenting them and all that and neither of those worked either. please help!
