Is backpack.tf safe?
I'm trying to get better in trading but I've noticed that a lot of people use external sites. My question is: Is it safe to log in to backpack.tf through steam and all that stuff?

Yes
unless it's a phishing site

Does it have the steam login thingy?
Does that link have a secured sign in the URL?

If so, yes, it's safe. And yes, BP.TF is safe.

No third party website is 100% safe. They can be hacked or taken over and all your informaiton can be stolen.

It opens the door to more phishing and the rest, its never really safe, its just done because sites like to track and I guess pay the price for convenience. Its why face book wants you to log into other sites using their login to comment and the rest. Your safety isn't that important to them;)

Backpack.tf and tf2outpost.com are popular and safe

I run a site with OpenID and I can assure you that backpack.tf is safe.
You're not really required to login for anything on it though so wether or not you log in is up to you.

Once you press the Sign In Through Steam (SITS) button your browser is sent to STEAM's site where you log in.
It sends back a GET request with your STEAMID (that number in your steam URL) and the site then gets your information via the steam api.
At no point is the password sent to the site.

It uses the Steam profile API (I think it's called 'OpenID', I wouldn't know), which is run by Valve and doesn't give away account logins.
Do not, however, give your login to the site if the address bar doesn't say 'Valve Corperation.' That would be a fake site. Of course, backpack.tf is a popular website and wouldn't tarnish it's reputation like that unless it was a fake copy.
