Did TF2 at one point cost money?

I played TF2 a long long long time ago. I though I remember paying money for TF2 but I was talking to a friend awhile back ago and he was saying it was always F2P.
So was it always F2P and I am just dumb or did you have to buy the game back in the day?

It went F2P back in 2011 with the Meet the Medic update. Before it did cost money.

Thats where your half wrong.

At one point TF2 did cost money and 2 classes (if im right) you had to unlock; Scout and Sniper.

Also, If you bought the game before the game went Free-To-Play you would get a hat named proof of purchase, letting you know and others know that you bought it before the update. The Orange Box gives you premium automaticaly on TF2 but if you have TF2 Free-To-Play then Bought the Orange Box it wouldent count.

You never had to unlock classes. I bought it during the early release before there was a orange box.
