Can I use special characters (ei. &, %, $) with name tags?

For instance, I want to rename my Maul something that has to do with the & symbol (e.g. Hi&), however, when I click to confirm it and it gives the preview, it shows everything except the symbol I wanted. I do notice, that when I use two of the symbols (Hi&&), it shows correctly in the preview it gives. I am not entirely sure of this, because I think that only using one Ampersand symbol works just doesn't show in the preview.
I haven't used the nametag yet, I just want some clarification from any of you players out there.

you're better off trying and seeing what ends up working and doesn't. like starting your name with % in steam people can see it, but in game the first % will be omitted. also why Hi&?

It worked in game, but if you looked at it from steam, it would show the & symbols.
