TF2 over heating my laptop. Not sure why?
I have a brand new HP Dv6 Laptop

AMD A10-4600 APU 2.30 GHz

RAM 6GB

AMD Radeon HD 7660G 3022 MB VRAM

The computer is a few months old, and has no visible dust showing. I am using a cooling pad so that helps. But with all of that it still tells me nothing on why this over heat my laptop. Any other game I play has no lag or heating porblems.

The main cause of this post is that, when I'm in game I get Major FPS lag (I average 50 FPS) just the game freezes for 5 seconds at a time and it ruins the game.

Does anyone know any way to fix this?

Edit years later: (12/12/16)
Sorry for dropping this thread. Came to find out on my end that it was my HDD running constantly @ 100%. I replaced it and it fixed multiple issue. Luckly I had just bought it and they fixed it for free.

I have an older dv6 and I can tell you that's just what happens with these laptops.

There's nothing you can do besides stack some books up put the laptop on them and get a desk fan to blow a lot of cool air onto the back and underside of the laptop.

Does that describe why im getting horrible in game stuttering? What would cause this?

I looked up those specs even though AMD Radeon HD 7660G 3022 MB VRAM got a good rating, AMD A10-4600 APU 2.30 GHz got bad ratings. Try lowering the graphics and maybe try getting "Chris's TF2 Configs" which basically turns down the graphics more to help.

Laptops in general do not disperse heat correctly.

When it gets hot the system starts working on overdrive tiring itself out .

Look into lowering your clock speed I keep mine at 75% while playing tf2 so it doesn't overheat as quick. The settings to lower should be in the power plan options.

Is it a stuttering lag or actually regular FPS lag?

they don't call them toasters for nothing

Yea, but still.... heating or not, why would it cause TF2 to lag like it does? I play any other game and it runs quit well.
I would do what End said, in combination with Chris's tf2 configs.
-Right click the battery on your taskbar
-power options
-change plan settings
-change advanced power settings
-processor power management
-maximum processor power
Find a nice underclock that runs without overheating (mine is 60% power)

Also go here - http://clugu.com/tf2mate/ - and create a setup for tf2 (i use chris's maxframes)
If this doesn't work, you should probably get your computer checked

I used to have a laptop, laptops get really hot no matter what.
You can buy a usb fan that you place your laptop onto, it does the job.

Don't mess with over clock unless you really know what you're doing, it can physically damage your laptop.

Underclocking has no real danger or caution other than setting your processor so low that your pc doesn't work, so...

Random necro, also I can't believe it's been almost two years since I posted in this thread.
Boy, time sure does go by quickly.

Happy to see my old posts now since I have recently upgraded my PC and no longer deal with low fps/high temp BS.

Underclocking is safe to do unless you go to extremes like 10% power or lower etc.
Generally I wouldn't suggest going under 50% unless your laptop overheats that bad, if that's the case just get something new because the thermal throttling that's taking place will basically make the laptop useless.

Do your self a favor next time and never ever buy a HP-laptop. You can fry eggs on HP-laptops.

EDIT; Thread is really old. Lol.
