[How-to] Hosting Listen servers
This could be a guide technically, but oh well.

Having issues hosting servers in TF2? Tired of your buds saying "Server not responding"? Have you tried solution after solution with no avail? Well you are probably in the same boat as I once was and this thread might just be for you.

Here is the formal breakdown:
  • For those using a router, make sure you make your IP to it static. If you need to know how, just Google "Set static IP"
  • Forward the ports 27000 all the way to 27050 as well as 3478 through 4380 for UDP and TCP on both your router and on your Windows Firewall. If you are unsure how to do one or the other, refer to these:
    Router Port Forwarding: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm
    Firewall Port Forwarding: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows-vista/Open-a-port-in-Windows-Firewall
  • Next you need to grab your public IP address. You can do that by just Googling 'what is my IP' and Google will show it at the top of the results. Copy that as we'll need it in a second.
  • Load up TF2 and host a server. Once loaded, go into the Dev console and type:
    "ip YOUR_IP"
Replace YOUR_IP with the public IP address grabbed earlier, of course. After that, type the following:
    "sv_lan 0"
    "sv_pure 1"
  • Now change the level by typing the following into the console:
    "map MAP_NAME"
Replace MAP_NAME with your map of choice. Once that is all loaded up type the final following command:
    "heartbeat"

After all that, your server *should* be joinable! If your friends are still getting "Server Not Responding", here are a few other things you can try:
  • Have them go into the dev console and type: "connect YOUR_IP" and just have them replace YOUR_IP with the public IP address.
  • If that still doesn't work, type "sv_lan 0" in the console again. I've found that sometimes it tends to switch back to 1 on the occasion.

This solution should also work in any other Source game that has this issue. If the problem still persists, my bet is it may be something to do with your Internet Service Provider. So going to have a chat with them would be my last resort.

And my favourite class is the Spy. Thanks! And have fun!

Odd. Is this for your router or for your firewall? If it is the latter, you may have already added an exception for those ports. If it's your router you will need to look over all the exceptions you added and see if you might have it set up for another machine. Typically, a router will not let you forward ports to more than one machine.

Though TF2 has been the oddball Source game for me. Just like you, I can host games in all other Source titles, but this requires special attention. After this fix, Gmod and the rest work every time without action, but TF2 requires this list of actions to be completed each time. Gmod and the rest will show up on the browser while TF2 does not and can only work with the 'connect' command. In this sort of case I have concluded that the issue stems from an Internet Service Provider related problem. Perhaps even a pinch of a Windows related problem too.

So, is this currently not possible? Because of the whole main-menu change, you cant create a custom server.

If you scroll to the bottom of the main menu there is a button to create a server...

Well it gives me notications every time someone posts on it as I have it set to my favourites and I just want people to know who are posting in it that it's from 2013 so they should find something newer to help them. You got a problem with that or something? lol
