Team Fortress 2

Linux is a pretty terrible OS for gaming. TF2 can break the Ubuntu OS if crashes.
As much as I dislike windows 8, I hate to say it but Linux is just not meant for gaming. It's a whole lot more issues than it's worth, as it will have constant crashes, and can even mess up the OS entirely, thus having to re-install the OS, or go into the files and fix the issue manually if you know what you're doing. Which sadly, most people don't know what they're doing on linux, as it's not a user friendly environment when it comes to gaming, crashes, installs, etc.
This will only make linux worse for the average user, thus being a failure. Not sure why, but I've seen a whole lot of issues with the TF2 on ubuntu 12.04 and definitely 12.10. Issues where the whole system locks up, having you to manually force a reboot, causing the OS to completely destroy it's files, requiring the user to either re-install it, or fix it somehow, usually resulting in the user just uninstalling and using windows.

Sorry valve, but this isn't going to work, linux is not meant for gaming. It's meant for the only thing it's good for - and that's server hosting.

This.
If you have to re-install any Linux because you run a game as a non-root user and it crashes, you're doing something wrong.

Not at all, depending on your build and graphics card, you can pretty much mess up your entire OS with Ubuntu as it's been proven.
Sadly this is mostly with Nvidia cards as nvidia seems to have poor support, especially in the latest ubuntu 12.10.
Now, you can go into linux, uninstall the driver via terminal/commands, reboot and re-install, however the average user will NOT know how to do this, what I'm saying is that because of this, this steam for linux and pushing people to "make the switch" with TF2, CSS, and a bunch of other games coming to linux will NOT be pretty at all.

linux is like osx, just worse
Windows will always be the best gaming OS, no matter how bad it gets. Having second thoughts on whether or not I want to install Ubuntu on my current PC.
Actually you can't; non-root users do not have write access to /usr/*, /boot, /etc, and all other important system directories. That's actually one of the security features of Linux and one of the reasons why it's installed on over 95% of the world's supercomputers. If a hacker compromised a user account or you got a virus, the best it can do is just dump the local unimportant files, documents, and music unless it got root.

Actually, if the errors and crashes have poor messages and are non-intuitive, the problem is with the programmers of the game and not the OS.
I had some problems with my nvidia card and some crashes, but everything was so easy to fix since internet is available and a huge community is willing to help.

Seriously, I've posted on the ubuntu forums a problem I had and they promptly responded on the hour. I can't say I had the same feedback with my Windows and Mac OS.
And I agree Linux is not for everyone. This is just going to cause chaos when a bunch of people who don't even know what RAM is are trying out Linux. It's just not really meant for super casual PC users.

You need the right drivers to run steam, and steam's games such as TF2.
If you are using an Nvidia card, this can be a major issue depending on the model, this can cause driver issues if the right one for steam is not installed, leading to what I just said, where when the user reboots the system you get literally nothing but the background image and no unity UI at all.
When this happens, the user will have to pretty much re-install if they don't know how to fix this issue, repeating the steps and making sure the right driver is installed.

This itself will cause confusion as Ubuntu 12.04's additional drivers will have like 6 different drivers for the NVidia ones, some working and others not.

My point in this whole thing is that Ubuntu 12.10 and .04 are not user friendly, especially when it comes to the matter of installing drivers, and the right one that will work with the particular card.
You CANNOT run steam without installing those drivers with an Nvidia card.

John Carmack has been saying that Wine (a Windows compatibility layer to run Windows stuff on Linux) is better than native clients, but for entirely different reasons. He only looks at the business side of things, if you have read the other articles all over the internet. More $$$ (in his opinion). He ignores the technical side of things, even though the whole issue is technical.

We both are saying that Linux is no way in hell user-friendly and ready for the swarm of computer newbies getting it for this promotion. Linux was made by geeks, for geeks.

To be honest I find it idiotic to install TF2 other than to get the item. I will do so myself, but it's good to have it installed in case of Windows going awry (which it probably will, knowing Microsoft), especially since I'm gonna getting some sweet sale games.
