Rarest/Most Expensive Item in TF2?

I was just curious, what's the rarest item in TF2? And what is the most expensive? I know those earbuds are worth a fortune, but I feel like there's something even more expensive.

Also, is it pretty much too late now to sell winter crates? I sold my first Naughty Crate for $.75 before Christmas, now I'm struggling to sell my last one with people selling theirs for as low as $.30 (Clearly I'm not very experienced with the economy system in this game, lol)

To be honest there are lots of different items that are extremely rare, for example, the Burning Team Captain is by far the most expensive item on the market, going for 5000 dollars or more. But if we're talking actual rarity, then one could easily look towards the top notch, or anyone of the many highlander badges that are only given to certain people, or the propaganda contest items that wereonly given to 3 people a couple years ago.
