Whats in the medics syringes?

So I wondering, what does the medic put in his syringes? I mean, For his main form of healing is his medigun, correct? Which kinda looks like the ghostbusters gun with the beam and all. I just find it strange that a doctor would shoot syringes at his foes.

For example: "Oh theres a Red enemy scumbag! (assuming you're alone for some odd reason, as a medic you shouldn't be.) I'm going to retreat and fire, quess what? MEDICINE! Yes! taste my Vaccine! May it cure that itch you got last saturday whilst drinking and at the bar with the distastefull women!"

Or is he just shooting blanks? If not, then wouldn't you be able to heal teammates if they were full of some medicinal syrum? I'm not sure, I just want some kind of explanation!

Ive thought about that too, I dont know what's in them if they had drugs in them you would think they would apply some sort of effect so I think they are just empty syringes.

Uh, never thought syringes actually hurt regardless not having a syrum? Plus they're shot at high speed and they're sharp enough to deal damage. Also "Syringes are fired out of the weapon at a rate of ten syringes a second, at the speed of 990 Hammer units/61.88 feet per second."
