I'm pretty sure it was when a few small items in certain Steam backpacks got deleted, or they didn't go Vintage, so players complained to Valve and they accidentally turned whole backpacks into Vintage, not just the ones that were supposed to be vintage/

Why would you want it vintage? you'd just become a scam target.

How did some people obtain a Vintage Big Kill?

A few forum comments explained that for a short time when you'd delete the item, Valve used to restore it and it became vintage. Here's a more in-depth explanation ->

"The Vintage Big Kill has the same story as the Vintage Max Head. It is where players deleted their Max Sets and then went to Steam Support about it. When going to Steam Support about it they granted them a new set, with normal ID's. These normal ID's meant that the items were not classed as a promo but just as a normal item. This meant that when the Mann Co. Update hit, the items would be classed as a normal item which is going to turn in to Vintage, rather than a promo which is to stay unique. However, the first Vintage Big Kill was not because of this. It was because somebody got a copy of Sam & Max : The Devil's Playhouse and then the game disappeared from their game list. When they launched TF2 they didn't have the promos either so they contacted Steam Support who admitted to their mistake, gave the person the game and they also ended up with a Max Set with normal ID's."

If you were wondering

"The Vintage big Kill is not on the list of Vintage items, why? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by ‎Patricksbarnard (talk) • (contribs)

The pages only lists the official sources of Vintage items. Items like Vintage Bill's Hat, Earbuds, and Big Kill are glitches, and aren't included, as noted by the last note at the bottom of the list: "Additionally, due to glitches, a small number of additional Vintage items exist outside of these official sources." Hope that helps. --Omolong (talk) 09:35, 13 March 2014 (PDT)"
