IMO, there should be both Highlander and 6s. One of them doesn't replace the other because they are fundamentally different.
I personally believe that the people they sought opinions from on the update heavily influenced the decision to favor 6s as the “default” gamemode over hl. Although it’s worth noting that again, hl hardly holds the same relevancy in the competitive atmosphere as 6s does, so it would be admittedly pretty insulting to endorse a gamemode only specialist mains play over the longstanding community-favorite.
6s is just what was decided and some maps were just designed around that as well as weapon balancing
.) highlander is a team organization nightmare... 9 people concurrently avalibe for matches, per team is almost as likely as you winning the lottery (in unofficial comp)
.) highlander is too slow paced for your avg comp maniac
.) highlander is too complex for your avg comp audience (and by extension, the narrator, if theres one)
.) highlander needs things like competent full-time heavy players, something thats hard to come by
.) most importantly, most of the ppl valve kept contact with during mym's development where pushing for 6s and thus, for 6vs6
so we should just give up on tf2 esports
