Team Fortress 2
how to make the game run better (linux mint)
hiii I am relatively new to computer gaming and I was wondering why TF2 runs so bad? My hardware is new and I have all the drivers and stuff installed but I am dropping fps like crazy. Linux shouldn't be the problem either since TF2 is native to it (or maybe I am missing something here.) Is there any way to get better performance in this game I have been wanting to play it for a while but with this fps I do not think I can :(

I play TF2 under Ubuntu and it runs well. But you should know that native Linux versions of games are not always the best thing. Until Valve release the --vulkan command line switch for Source games (nearly all except... TF2), the best, and sometimes the only, way to play was via Proton. One more time, this is not possible for TF2, as the VAC system will not let you to connect to servers if you launch the game with Proton...
What's your hardware ?

I have an AMD Ryzen 5 7600 and a Radeon RX 6800 with 32 gigabytes of memory DDR5 5600mhz. My frames are dipping as low as 40 sometimes :(

Ensure that TF2 is running on your dedicated GPU and not your integrated one. You can disable your iGPU in the BIOS if necessary.

Except the GPU (nvidia for me), I have a pretty similar configuration, so, that should not be a problem. Have you tried to run other games, Source & non-Source ?

That's a common problem, that's true.

I've read some things about bad or variable performances in games when running Wayland too.

I run TF2 (and other games) on Wayland, and have had no significant performance issues. I am pretty sure that TF2 is trying to run on the R5 7600's iGPU and getting very low performance due to it.

X (and by extension XWayland apps) are a bit funky when it comes to multi GPU systems.

put
gamemoderun %command%
in your launch options if you haven't already. Put it before any + or - options

no problem!

Another performance tip if you are encountering poor performance in community servers is to disable HTML MOTDs via the TF2 console, as HTML MOTDs can tank performance.

Don't listen to this person, it's about a 7-8 year old backdoor that is a thing of history now.

That's not relevant in this thread.
