TF2 viruses?
Is there a possibility to get a virus from some TF2 servers? My friend and I played the other day, and shortly after we finished, his anti-virus software reported some sort of virus to him and he quickly got rid of it. Today, a few days after that, I got on and found four programs called SteamApps in my library, each with random numbers following them. Clicking on Community Hub took me to the Home Page, as did the forums. I restarted Steam, but found my password, which I knew was right, wasn't working. I changed the password and got back on Steam. The SteamApp things are gone from my library but now I'm on edge. I figure for something to target Steam likely had to originate from it. I'm likely wrong of course, I don't know anything about machinery.. TF2 is my prime suspect, but another game is under my scrutiny.

Just curious, thanks in advance.

Those SteamApps things are happening for everybody, don't get concerned about them.

And for your original question - I don't entirely know if TF2/other Source games can spread malware (there were rumors about saigns spreading some form of malware), but if you're concerned about it, go into advanced options and disable HTML MOTD's.

While it is possible to get viruses from the internet, getting one is rare outside of shady sites or clicking on shady ads.

Although this is not the case, there was an incident that involved Skial servers switching from Pinion (widely regarded as a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ due to use of forced wait times and Flash which is buggy at best) to some rogue advertisement using a Java exploit to inject a virus on any player's computer. This may be the reason Java was disabled for HTML MotDs with the March 19th, 2013 patch.

That was 7 months ago. Your friend most likely got the virus from something else, not TF2 or any other Source Engine game. Do not worry too much and besides the SteamApps things are, as mentioned above, happening to a lot of people. If you do feel you might be traversing into dangerous territory, disabling HTML MotDs is a good thing to try.

Viruses aren't just from tf2, the anti-virus may have only picked up on it today it's probably just a coeincidence trust me I have been told I should be remving "X" because it's a virus and it is a good program I have, dont sweat it viruses aren't a big deal.

Viruses aren't a big deal? My last computer was literally killed by one. Tell me that's not a big deal.

Well it's a good question, I think not because the virus when downloaded has to execute (open), and only the user of computer can do it. If it's not executed it will just lay around in your steam folders. And Anti-Virus will detect it if it's not crypted, if it's crypted then and with java drive-by then you're probably ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Yea stuff like java....

The only thing anyone can do is just keep your system fully up to date with patches, make sure to keep flash/and any java/adobe nonsense up to date as well...and anti virus.
