For his treachery of dare touching the eldritch horror that is that dreaded book his eye was forever turned into a monster!
It's still teeeechnically there, just not present in his head, and he's blind in it because it's sentient or hurts or maybe he CAN see outta it or something. Either way, since it already exists the medic can't "regrow" what's already there due to magical reasons.
