Was soldier in the military ?

In the tf2 comics the demoman and scout say he was not in the military. So its hard to say that he is or is not in the military

Though he wanted desperately to fight in World War 2, the Soldier was rejected by every branch of the military. Undaunted, he bought his own ticket to Europe. After arriving and finally locating Poland, the Soldier taught himself how to load and fire a variety of weapons before embarking on a Nazi killing spree for which he was awarded several medals that he designed and made himself. His rampage ended immediately upon hearing about the end of the war in 1949.

The Soldier was rejected from the military, which probably caused some emotional issues with him, driving him to go to the war himself.

In a way, I think I'm similar to the Soldier.
My childhood dream was to be a Navy S.E.A.L, but I was later found out to be Autistic, along with suspected Schizofrenia.
And now my big sister is joining the Navy.
I know women can't be S.E.A.Ls (It is actually against the rules for a woman to be in the S.E.A.Ls), but she's still joining the Navy, which is what I wanted to at least do, even if I didn't pass the S.E.A.Ls training.
My new dream was to become a mercenary, even if it meant I had to leave my home.
I figured if I can't be an official soldier, I could still be my own soldier.
