Engi's job consists of guarding his buildings, moving them around, making sure they're actually being useful, and keeping himself alive.
Medic has to do enemy Uber percentage guessing, keeping himself alive when need be, keeping people overhealed, healing priority, and Uber timing.
I just find Medic more exciting and much more directly useful, although Engi can be just as useful, albeit indirectly and with a lot more work.
Well... what said I guess.
Basically, don't main. If you can only play one class, you are hurting your team when that one class is no longer useful. Learn how to play at least one class from each category well.
A Level 3 Sentry is the most powerful weapon in the game. If you can manage to keep that gun up on Defense, you're doing more for your team than an Ubercharge as a Medic.
If you can learn the proper method to keep your Sentry through an Ubered Demoman or Heavy, then you are a force to be reckoned with.
But don't disregard the power of a Medic. The Ubercharge is the most powerful feature of the game, as proven by it being the wheels on which competitive games run. Because of the power of an Ubercharge, it turns the Medic from a class that counters nothing, to a class that counters everything (albeit for a brief period of time). A Medic can turn a good player into a great player, and a great player into an amazing player. The same is said for a team that has a good Medic.
I'll finish off with this note:
You don't have to main a single class. Many people main two or more classes, which greatly improves their flexibility upon joining a match. If you're torn between the two, then don't be. Main them both.
But with medic, not only are there very few medic mains, but a lot of people just plain don't like playing medic, and to new players, it's not immediately obvious what situations call for a medic or what to do as one.
So yeah, I say main medic. But if the team you're on already has two medics, switch to engie.
