Aren't hats basically just NFTs, but without the weird crypto blockchain ♥♥♥♥?
Seems that way to me. Never understood why somebody would spend like 10k on some 1's and 0's on a video game server.

Calling hats worthless because hats are basically NFTs, and NFTs are famously worthless, is inaccurate though. That being said, hats are definitely luxury goods. You don't need fancy jewellery either, but some people buy expensive necklaces, watches etc anyway, when a cheaper item would probably accomplish the same thing. You don't need to understand why a Rolex watch is so valuable when you could tell the time on a 10€ watch just fine, but it is. Besides "supply and demand", I don't understand it either.

Items in video games being virtual doesn't really change much compared to their physical counterparts if people agree that they have a value. Meanwhile most NFTs are worthless now because people lost interest as soon as the bubble burst, therefore the value crashed. The same could happen with TF2 or CS2 items as well as (for example) physical, real-life gold for any reason. For more information on that, look up "Tulip mania" on the internet.

Some people just like a certain look or want to stick out
aren't hats just NFTs, but without all the stuff that makes them NFTs?

It provides some actual value within society. A hat is basically just an NFT.
in the tf2 lore, hats ARE sources of prestige and power. the more hats you have, the higher in the social higherarcy you are. so, people are just immersing themselves into the canon.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

well they're living proof that NFT's are completely unnecessary because people already had digital ownership over items
They are but they have more value than nft those have literally no value lol.

Traders don't even care tf2 is dead or unplayable they only care if their funny pixels have trading and sale value still.

I mean that's correct, but I would state there are tangible reasons you'd want to utilize decentralized NFTs instead of the traditional centralized database. Decentralization reduces the single point of failure problem if it's implemented correctly, there's a significant reduction in one person having a bunch of power over the database, increases user freedom if implemented correctly, reduces server costs to the database's creator, etc.

I mean, I think most people who know about NFTs already understand NFTs are sold for ♥♥♥♥ all now.

There's probably an NFT out there like that too.
