I once played TF2 with the Steam Controller, and the touchpads were a great replacement for the mouse. I can't imagine using other controllers though (especially because I always swear by mouse+keyboard unless the game needs analog sticks).
Note that my positivity comes from the Steam Controller being able to emulate mouse controls really well.
so theres nothing inherently bad about using controllers, i think it's good for gradually getting used to playing the game. and play however you want, aslong as it's fun bro :)
- WASD replacement (left stick)
- Gyro for mouse, with right stick for rapid direction change (right stick click for gyro disable, for gamepad reposition)
- Jump, atk1, atk2, last weapon (A B X Y or PS's geometry)
- Left/right top buttons and triggers allow crouch, atk3, weapon left/right swap
- One of the middle buttons could be used for voice chat
- That only leaves out voice commands, misc keys like intel drop (tho you prob could bind some of those to the D-pad) and, obviously, the text chat.
So I'd say you can have 99.9% of any-class controls functioning on gamepad. You can have keyboard nearby if you need the text chat, but this might not even be necessary.
(And yes, playing first person shooters on a gyro-less controller is just plain stupid when you need to compete with PC players.)
And I gotta say.
It's not looked down upon for using a controller to play TF2.
If anything its more odd than frowned upon.
It's all a matter of preference and personal experiences that lets people decide if they like controllers or mouse and keyboard (Or if you're a Gigachad you use a gas pedal and steering wheel controller to play TF2).
I know for a fact that Valve did not implement aim assist for PC releases and updates to the TF2 we know today.
Because they did but only on some projectile weapons in the game and it isn't very strong but you won't notice it until you analyze it frame by frame.
Unfortunately we are Literally still in the dark ages of TF2 or deluded ourselves to believe that Valve "might" fix TF2 but as of typing this now Valve is starting neglect again due to not wanting to get sued after getting bombarded by other complaints last year.
If you use a controller to play TF2 (or Steam Deck) that's your choice to stick with.
However if you're one of those players that uses a third party software that hooks a mouse and keyboard to act and pretend to be a controller in it's place.
You do not deserve to play ANY online multiplayer games cause you're a stinky cheater if you do.
Cause the point of playing on a controller is because you prefer to play on a controller.
Not to gain an unfair advantage.
