TF2: What is "textmode"?

I've tried looking it up, and have found nothing. I'm not sure if it is explained in the game or I'm just not looking hard enough, but whenever I try to I only find guides on how to idle. I'm guessing it's when you have the chat box up, but it seems unlikely.

t's been said that, in order to find items, you can't be in textmode. But I still find items with it on, so that can't be it.

I'm pretty sire textmode means no loading of graphics and such, just plain text for you.
I think it gives only a console to you.

Text mode is when you run Team Fortress 2, but it only launches the code and nothing else.
