As a rule of thumb your stock syringe gun is middle of the road. Crusaders crossbow provides the most utility with the least self defense and the blutsauger is pretty much the opposite.
I tend to find the stock medigun to be the best simply because of how versatile it is but the others most definitely have their uses. It really depends what you're walking into though.
Melee weapon wise the ubersaw isn't a bad option, certainly one of the more go to one, the amputator simply because of it's taunt can be useful sometimes on certain maps, or if there's an abundance of pyros because the extra healing from it basically negates the damage you take from afterburn.
For defense i use:
crossbow, Kritzkrieg, amputator
For attack:
blutsauger, quickfix / stock, ubersaw
As long as you are healing everybody and you dont start running into enemies with your primary youre a good medic.
I personally use the crossbow, stock medigun, and the vita saw/ubersaw
Agreed. ArraySeven is good for entertainment. But he's definietely not a good role model for aspiring Medics. Especially for beginners.
How has no one mentioned the Overdose yet?
It's a utterly fantastic primary for people who (like me) can't hit with their crossbows and want to be healing frequently.
For secondary, it's all situational. Stock breaks sentries when you're on offense, kritz breaks people when you're on defense, Quick-Fix lets you keep a whole team alive, and Vaccinator... used to be the perfect pocketing medigun, but is now basically suck.
When it comes to melee, never use stock bonesaw, it's awful. Solemn Vow is gamebreaking if you have a mic and still useful if you don't (see a heavy at 5HP? Shoot him down). Amputator is great for survivalists since you completely negate afterburn--but only when you're holding it.. Ubersaw is great for the aggressive medics who love making clutch plays, and Vita-Saw is objectively the best melee in the game. Run it if you're going full tryhard and your enemies aren't dumb enough to feed you melee hits.
