it can be good on payload as soldier if you balance it out with the battalions backup, or a medic slightly behind you. pushing the cart at scout speed with a rocket launcher very helpful.
it's usage really varies based on map. if you think about it what it does is increase the advantage hitscan has on some maps and slightly increases the chance of you getting killed when ambushed by scouts or whatever.
if there is long sightlines you are in more danger but if there are tight corners you're in about the same situation as without it because you can still control the corner/choke by using splash damage to stop them from being able to hit you in the first place
I also feel that Pyro should have been given this weapon as well. I don't see any real downside at giving Pyro the ability to capture or push objectives while others go forward and do their thing.
Heavy could possible make use out of it as well.
There's animations for the pain train being used by the Pyro too, so it was intended to be a Pyro weapon at some point and they just decided to not do it appearently.
pyro is only good in all those ways if you can do all those things
can u confidently face down a soldier with airblast while rocket dodging what u cant deflect?
can u confidently dodge around a cart or capture point for tens of seconds under fire?
can u confidently melee and melee dodge multiple targets at once?
can u confidently aim the flamethrower through the flames?
can u confidently shoot arc weapons?
can u fly well in source games?
do u know the maps well to plan ambushes?
can u turn around 3 times in one second and get the angle you planned?
can u.... stuff I forgot?
Playing pyro like a swiss army knife requires a crapton of different skills, it isn't handed to you like sniper stuff
i dont think it would be game breaking to give pain train to them
for what it's worth i find projectile/arcing patterns easier than hitscan because it's more forgiving than trying to keep your cursor perfectly on top of another player
yeah but you actually have to DO them. compared to camp like a sniper or just wait like a spy. and those classes have tons of insane OP stuff
sniper is a complete glass cannon and the hitscan is a pain in the ass because you can't lead the target. sniper is entirely about positioning and being aware of your surroundings despite the tunnel vision you get killed immediately if you aren't.
spy has some decent stuff but you have to close the distance to actually make your stabs and half the time even if you get it you end up dying. if you're standing around and waiting as spy you're doing it wrong you should be constantly moving.
