It's a great watch due to visuals, references and strong characterization of mercs, but I think in retrospect the story makes fairly little sense as we never got properly explained the mechanics behind the respawn machine or why the antagonists were doing what they were doing. A lot of things are basically handwaved away by respawn machine acting like a window to hell, the influence of which is sipping out causing the borderline paranormal events and discrepancies observed in the movie, which is a viable solution to the problem, but also creates an exploratory dead end as every single issue, plothole or discrepancy comes back to "machine did it", with no further details.

Things I particularly found questionable:
1) The time loops - time travel is universally just a trap for writers, don't do it;
2) What was pyro's and sniper's deal, what was their endgame;
3) Plague Doctor not explained at all.

Character interactions are top tier, but the plot is half-nonsense, IMHO.

Visuals and animation are really well done and genuinely impressive for SFM. The writing is kind of garbage and pretty pretentious, but it's harmless enough to sit through.

For a fan project? It's pretty decent, but I don't think it's the masterpiece a lot of people claim it to be.

Sometimes, stuff in horror stories should better be open to interpretation to be effective.

There are theories that work on the assumption that the Plague Doctor is either the Blue Medic's insane persona or his counterpart or an imposter who pulls his strings, which can explain why the Blue Spy finds a Bonesaw and suspects the Medic to be the Blue Scout's agressor, why the Medic has blood on his hands and finds clues to where the Scout is and why the Scout despises the Medic after being freed.

We even see the Plague Doctor playing chess with the Medic when the Blue Soldier mysteriously finds himself in trenches. They are playing a mind game. Who knows, maybe the Medic is schizophrenic or the Plague Doctor wants to ruin his life out of jealousy. Remember, the mercenaries aren't exactly the same as before when they come out of the respawn machine, the Scout's own intelligence got affected because of that
