WINDOWS 7 '"FIX"' LOCATED
Add -nosound to launch options, was able to host a training match. I dont know any work arounds to play with sound or if its possible, but if you REALLY need tf2 youll have to play mute for now.

Isn't Windows 7 having support for Steam drop completely soon?

doesn't support =/= doesn't work. Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 are so similar on the backend that a program written for windows 7 should still work on windows 10 and vice versa, unless it makes calls for dependencies that only exist on one operating system. "no longer supporting" means that, when Valve inevitably makes a change to Steam that breaks Windows 7 compatibility, they won't bother fixing it.

considering that it's only been 4 months, Valve has yet to make such a change. doesn't mean they won't. in fact, they probably dropped support because they plan to make such a change and don't want to waste time with an OS nobody uses.

nope still crashes with the -nosound option

CONFIRMED [Windows 8.1] : tried -nosound with x64 bit executable and it WORKS.

Since I still want sound however I will be using the 32bit executable (tf.exe rather than the 64 bit tf_win64.exe) with '-steam' parameter until hopefully Valve hotfixes whatever is relating to the audio stack that crashes on Win7/8.1.

Honestly makes sense it was related to audio.

THIS WORKS

added -steam to the name of tf.exe and launched got into a local bot match, POSSIBLY RELATED but i have -dxlevel 95 on too in launch options of steam.

you probably missed the other threads (including mine) regarding this issue : you can play with sound and no compromise , just use the 32 bit exe after renaming it like the 64 bit one

still good to know what was causing the crashes

Unashamed Windows 7 user here. Can also confirm this works. Thank you very much for this temporary fix!
