I also have this issue. I have antivirus disabled. I whitelisted the questionable files that others are having issues with along with the new exes (tf, tf_x64, vrad and shadercompile.exe).

Loading up TF2 works. Joining a server, it crashes to desktop. I have yet to A) disable my custom VPKs (mastercomfig and no unusuals mod) B) clear out my cache C) delete my /tf/ folder (before I back up my maps) in case it related to my settings or launch parameters.

Why must they release game breaking updates before weekends? Why not Monday so they can patch out the kinks? I never understood this mentality.

fwiw , i'm playing the game 100% vanilla so no mods or custom huds
i'm glad i'm not the only one , at least

edit :
and same happens if i try playing the "training" mode . it loads all the files and then crashes to desktop

My game also crashes when I go to configuration/settings.

My only recourse at this time is to hope for a bugfix tomorrow before the weekend, or attempt to nuke my entire tf2 install, save my maps/ folder and config.cfg for keybinds/mouse settings and reinstall fresh.

i just tried doing that (opening the options menu) and, yes, immediate crash

some people suggested getting rid of all custom launch options and / or using -autoconfig but nothing , still crashes

not looking good..

edit : databeats, out of curiosity, are you on windows ? and if so what version

Windows 8.1. I'm going to delete and install a fresh TF2 install tomorrow.

might be related to our version of windows then :\

While I changed careers, I feel 8.1 is closer to Windows 10 than it is Windows 7 in terms of it's operation/system afaik.
You could be right. It's funny that Steam still works for me but now TF2 doesn't. I will try and let our threads or your profile know tomorrow when I reinstall TF2 if I succeeded in finding a plan. Lets hope for a miracle patch or solution.

I have this issue too. Wth? Trying to see if I can just use the 32x version of TF2 until this gets sorted out. (Probably can't...)

MacOS doesnt support 64bit, so its been essentially discontinued, such thing happened with Counter Strike too
There's a GitHub issue here tracking the crashing on Windows 7/8.1: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games/issues/5662

we know what they're going to say, unfortunately, even if steam and the game are / were working just fine until a few hours ago :
"our fault" for not wanting to "upgrade" to a terrible version of windows to play games that were native on win7 or at least perfectly working until literally a few hours ago :(

i just want to add that i was able to join a local server, training course and open the options menu by using the "regular" tf.exe and not the 64 bit one

however, you can't join casual or other servers because you get a msg saying you're running insecure mode and need to restart

so our only hope is that they decide to make a small fix for us win 7-8 users so that we can use the 64 bit exe

chances of that happening ? i would say around 0,00004% ; so,still more likely than balance changes to the caber and bison but still not very likely

If you run the 32-bit "tf.exe" with "-steam" as a launch parameter does it let you join servers? (I sadly can't test myself at the moment)
