Team Fortress 2
TF2 is a Hero Shooter
I think the only reason people say "Class-based shooter" is because it makes the game sound more unique and special. It's the same logic for TF2's "taunts", where like maybe only a handful are actually a taunt and the rest are just Fortnite-esque emotes.

I genuinely laughed out loud to this post.
Classes, heroes, champions, it's all the same thing just different ways of saying it

You're right about the emotes though :steamhappy:
bro did not laugh out loud
Tf2’s my heccing wholesome hat themed war simulator
I always say "class/hero-based", because they are basically synonyms in this context, and it makes comparisons with some other game people like to mention easier. It still makes sense to call TF2 a class-based shooter and the other game a hero-based shooter.

Besides, back then there were only classes, no heroes. It was the more widespread term, probably due to RPGs. You didn't play as "that one specific druid", you played a druid.

The only people who say "class-based shooter" is TF2 players, and the only reason they say that is because they don't want to associate with Overwatch even though they love Overwatch

The game is more unique and special than most other FPS multiplayer games out there anyway

Yes, it is a hero shooter (just looking at the tags in the store page confirms it), but class-based is also a valid term, in the same way that you pick a class in RPGs, not a specific hero. I just like to distinguish them so I don't get rebuttals of the "but TF2 has classes, not heroes" kind, despite basically being the same thing. Though, "class" in other shooters often refers to their role more than their skills and abilities nowadays.

I also don't think that it's the players' obsession with Overwatch either. The scene evolved around characters with names (heroes), and TF2 came from a time with "nameless" characters (classes). They do have lore etc, but they are referred to as their class in-game. It's just TF2 coming from a different time.

No one's calling this game hero-based shooter, because that implies they're heroes when they're far from performing heroic acts.

They're Mercenaries who have a job to kill and wage war, there is no heroism.
If you class them as heroes doing a heroic job then I guess serial killers are just serial heroes just because they helped an old lady right after wiping an entire bloodline.

Completely moot point. The "hero" in hero shooter doesn't refer to the characters being heroic
It's more like calling water dihydrogen monoxide. Class-based shooter and Hero shooter are the same thing with the only difference being how Team Fortress 2 calls its heroes "classes" like how the people who created the dihydrogen monoxide hoax called water dihydrogen monoxide.

well then TF2 is just a protagonist shooter.
And yes, "hero" does refer to the characters being heroic

Overwatch 2 features many characters that are literally the bad guys, yet it's still considered a hero shooter. This is just proof that TF2 players are desperate to make the game seem more unique than it really is lmao.
