TF2 is a Hero Shooter
I think the only reason people say "Class-based shooter" is because it makes the game sound more unique and special. It's the same logic for TF2's "taunts", where like maybe only a handful are actually a taunt and the rest are just Fortnite-esque emotes.

Well it's been labelled as a class-based shooter since 1999, this was before hero-based shooters even existed. The hero title doesn't particularly suit mercenaries, either. They kill for cash, not justice.

As for Overwatch, even though a fraction of their roster are not heroes, it's still labelled as a hero-based shooter. Maybe you should be criticising them instead /s.

It's likely that the classes in TF2 are roles (e.g. in the comics I believe there are four mercenaries for each role), and heroes in OW are individual people with their own unique abilities.

Not sure why people expect Valve to retroactively change the genre of their game just because other companies use a different word.

As for taunts, again that's what they were labelled as. All original taunts are in some way taunting the enemy, then Valve decided to add in more taunts which may as well be labelled emotes. They were likely not anticipating adding additional taunts after release imo, especially itemised taunts as they didn't even have their own slot.

Name literally one single hero shooter if Team Fortress isn't one.
Quake Champions. That's an Arena Hero Shooter.
its a class based shooter. this game has classes in it, not heroes

Clearly not. Strogg is far from a hero.
But Strogg/Peeker still has an active ability. Hero Shooter laws.

eeermmmm what the sigma ?
Hero shooters: multiple playable characters, unchangeable or minimally changeable weapon loadouts, very limiting “skins” or minimal customization
Class based shooters: multiple playable characters, changeable weapon loadouts, generally more customizable areas and sometimes skins on top of that. Sometimes additional class changing substyles

There’s the difference. TF2 falls under the latter along with games like Deep Rock Galactic, and Titanfall. Overwatch, valorant, and (probably) Deadlock are the former. At least this is how I define them by noting patterns in these types of games. Also TF2 characters aren’t heroes, they’re maniacal mercenaries. None are hero like unlike say the literal superheroes in marvel rivals.

I like how class based shooter sounds compared to hero shooter, and I like tf2 more than other classed based / hero shooter games because it really focusses on distinguishing the classes to give each of them more depth so I think it deserves the title.
Also spot on with the emotes
i call tf2 a class-based shooter because they're called classes in-game.
mind-blowing, i know.

Are you comparing TF2 to literally just Overwatch and nothing else
Dang people forgot about Paladins
dirty Bomb
SMNC (RIP)
The entirety of COD
Battlefield
PvZ GW
PvZ GW2
We don't talk about BfN
SW:BF
SW:BF2

People really try to force the OW, TF2 comparison huh?
You guys are nerds for arguing over the semantics of the word hero
poliakov.noam Jun 6, 2024 @ 4:51am

You're literally listing games that focus on distinguishing the classes giving each of them more depth
I know, that's why I was saying there are others that do this as well. Not just OW.

I genuinely dunno why everyone always assumes OW first.

still called a class shooter as legacy, but yes it's a hero shooter

You're like TOTALLY right. Everyone is a hero and you have to shoot them!
I love how this thread is still going, despite the differences being so subtle that they might as well be synonyms.
