I forget if spies could do this in QWTF and TFC. Well, not ubercharge, since that mechanic was introduced in TF2, but being able to see enemies health.
In higher up play, if you can't get any good picks though, being able to tell your team who to target is a huge benefit though, as well as uber charge %. To the point you may just focus on keeping tabs on your enemy and reporting it more then anything else. Consider it very high reward, with very low effort, since you can do it while invisible.
(Telling teammates is an option too, but mostly if spy can't take care of those lowhps by himself.)
It doesn't come into play very often, but makes you feel like a genius when it does, which is the point of the class.
Interestingly Medic is also capable of this when he equips Solemn Vow, and i swear it used to be a default feature for him...
