How do drops work in TF2?

Illustrate me, I haven't played this game in years and I don't remember anymore.

If I recall correctly:
They are timed and random, weapons have a very high percentage of dropping and cosmetics and other items have an absurdly small percent; there's a weekly limit for drops and you get a box daily.
