Report a translation problem
According to original concepts demo was supposed to be white and have red hair.
I guess valve changed that to avoid it looking like they're white supremacists or something.
I can't remember valve oficially saying hes gay, but judging by cosmetics he kinda is. As for diversity I don't think they were aiming for that specifically. At the time of release the mercs were not all that much diverse except for age and nationality (9 classes are men and 8 of them white) so I rather think it was the supremacy issue with demo after all.
Also the map DeGroot's Keep and the crown cosmetic Demo has at least implies that Demoman may have had royalty in his bloodline, which could suggest that a white ancestor may have married into a black family after 1807.
