Due to the restrictions, I would say that HUD mods are more widely used, simply because they work nearly everywhere.
i think the number 1 isn't really as big right now, like, just gimmick servers with random jailbreak fun aren't the thing. Full new games basically, they're always liked, but idk if they'd have big audience.
alternative models and stuff is always fun though.
here's a stupid idea for a mod: doomify everything. there's a center viewmodels mod already, also change ui mods, now imagine if players turned into different demons [for e.g. red soldier would be cacodemon, but blue soldier would be this brown cacodemon forgot the name]. And so on.

Do note however, it's not every single mod that works with the vscript. These mod are mostly tagged with "casual" so if there's a mod that doesn't say this or not recommend to the vscript, it won't work.
Edit: if you need proof, that I can provide since I'm using female pyro (not the busty one, get that ♥♥♥♥ out of here) and a custom shotgun.
