TF3 is not being released because Valve does not know what to do with existing inventories

This is fundamentally the same reason why Blizzard can not/will not release WoW II: because they do not know how to bring long-time players most beloved in-game items/mounts/xmogs/etc over to a new game. It is not a technical question of how, but rather more of a "how do we justify bringing all these relics to a new product?" It's a time-sunk into old thing/can not bear to part with the old beloved problem.

How many people would be willing to have their stranges reset to zero?

Blizzard won't do it, but there are tons of private WoW servers that regularly reset and have a fresh start almost monthly. (And those are the more popular servers amongst long time players)

Valve won't do it, but players would. After all, there are plenty of community servers that let you build and equip cosmetic loadputs for free.

I don't think using classic players is a good example, because these people have been detached from the continuation of the game for a good while. The players that Blizzard does not know how to deal with are the players who have played for 15+ years and have become attached to their characters/stuff they've earned over the years. The players who have played from vanilla/bc/wotlk to Dragonflight are a different beast than the people who think classic is best and have dropped out of retail long ago.

Having items on private servers is not a replacement for the """value""" in your global account though. That's the deciding factor I think. It's the people who care about their inventory holding everything back.

They can do the same ♥♥♥♥ they did with CSGO, that's what I meant. And no, nobody gives a ♥♥♥♥ about TF2 items cause Valve makes way less money with this game.

TF3 isn't being released because nobody wants to work on it
porting items over is the easy part, catering to this kindergarten class of a community is the real challenge

Most of the players I'm talking about ARE long time players, though. Ones that have been playing since the beginning. Some of them still have their old accounts and don't touch them or just outright deleted them.

Yeah, ultimately, the factor does come down to who likes their items enough to stay, but I've found, in my experience, that longtime players are more likely to drop their inventory in favor of better servers/etc. Even on these private servers, it's all the recent/new folks that come in and try to dominate the market or hoard items when most of the vets don't really care.

And yeah, item value on a private server doesn't mean anything, but none of the items have any real value outside of sentimental even on official servers. Yeah, people will pay hundreds for them, but it has no actual value outside of the game unless you're that deep into the game.
