skins vs war paints
Was the war paint system a good idea or should valve have stuck to the weapon specific skins of tough break and gun mettle. Personally I’m torn since war paints have the obvious advantage of being applicable to so many weapons, but skins have the advantage of being designed around certain models so they are of much higher quality and have more detail. The drop in quality in war paints is also very noticeable since they’re fairly simple to make. What do you guys think?

It's not necessarily advantageous that they can be applied to everything. It makes things less impactful and has made it so that any amount of effort put into specifically tailoring skins to weapons is for naught as VALVe isn't interested in quality where quantity can be concerned. This isn't to say that every skin is automatically a win because there's still more ♥♥♥♥ skins than good skins, but it certainly was more impactful when they were made with the weapon in mind, rather than "this texture goes here on every single weapon"
Both are pretty awful, skins less so.

Yeah, tbh I don’t even know why I said I was torn because the more I think about the more I realize I prefer skins way more. And as far as quality goes I agree that there are a lot of mediocre skins but the worst skins from those older collections are still leagues better than the worst war paints. Most of the “bad” ones people cite are just boring/bland like a lot of the merc/civ grades, but aren’t really offensive. I think I would personally argue against there being more bad skins than good since the only skins I actually consider bad are the brain candy and flower power ones. Just my opinion though.

How are they both awful? Do you mean bad for the game in general or that a lot of skins/war paints individually are bad.

Ill never open a crate for paints as battle scarred exists, ugliest thing ever and i bet I'd get it a hundred times in a hundred crates

They're only bad because people make bad skins.
Skins that actually mesh with the game can be good for it.

The fact that most warpaints make look even the worst skins look decents speaks volumes. It's genuinely shocking how many warpaints are just pure ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Skins look better, I can't really say there's any war paints I actually like, but I do think a few of the skins are really cool, like the killer bee scattergun or the wwii bomber rocket launcher

You've probably heard this before but check out the gentlemanne's collection. Its one of the old contract collections and every skin looks clean as hell. They are fairly expensive if you want fac new tho

skins are like buying a handcrafted piece of furniture from a well respected furniture store

and buying a warpaint is like buying a cheaply manufactured lawchair from walmart
