Team Fortress 2
Gold/Australium Weapons are Not Valuable
It's literally just decoration, there are more better war paints then a golden knife. Having australiums just make you more vulnerable to people trying to scams. A golden pan isn't even that good looking in the first place, it's just something people want to have so they are viewed as at least a good player.

An australium weapon is just a weapon that's yellow, nothing else. Hell even a Sunriser Scattergun looks better then the Australium version (Plus the Frozen Aurora and the Neo-ween.)

if skins were bought solely to affect how good someone was at the game, many Australium users would *still* be (and are) hot garbage. It's the implied prestige of either having done MvM or otherwise worked up for it that has *social* value. The glow added to killfeed icons is also another differentiator that warpaints do not have, giving people who'd otherwise avoid it a way to further set themselves apart from people who do not own them.

Betcha think that fiat currency has no value, too. Value ends up being determined by availability & demand subsequently assigned to it. Currency (in our case, ref/keys/etc) just ends up being an abstraction of real-world money.

Just because something has no value to you does not mean it is not valuable. Your priorities are simply different.

I fully agree because I have australiums and I'm still hot garbage

Bro every hat in the game is the same way it just has to do with rarity
it takes getting really lucky and a lot of MvM tours (tours are $3 minimum) to get an aussie

they're just cosmetics."

Only a couple skins are reflective at all, and when they are it’s usually a small amount of the weapon. Aussies are special because they are fully reflective and look unique as a result.

They also always come in strange so you’ll be set in comparison to spending more on a strange version of a skin.

And also they are pretty liquid because bots buy/sell at similar amounts, so they can almost be used as currency sometimes.

You’re missing the whole point. A majority of their value comes from their rarity. But it also looks great on some weapons making it even more expensive plus it’s shinyyyyyyyyyy
