Save up metal, search for trader.

Or save up twice as much metal, play the crafting gambling game, hope for the best.

Just keep playing the game for those weapon drops. These weapon drops can be changed into scrap metal. I would personally avoid using the game's crafting to scrap function because it needs two weapons of the same type. Say for example you find a Syringe gun and a knife for spy. You're better off using a site like scrap.tf or maybe find a scrapbanker.( But I'm pretty sure those guys are extinct now. Dunno haven't been playing tf2 for a while.) Now save up this scrap metal until you get enough refined metal to get a hat you really want. In buying the hat, make sure you find someone selling it for a price lower than what pricecheck sites tell you, so you can make a profit out if it. Just keep doing this until you get many items. Soon you'll probably be having high value items such as unusuals or other crap. If you want to get something out of the stuff you no longer use, try selling them for a price a bit higher than what sites tell you they are, without highballing. Some people will pay a lot of nice things because they want that item really bad.



Anyways, sorry for this long comment, but TL;DR : Get weapons, scrap them, save, buy for low, sell for high.

Also I barely post comments on discussions. Mostly because it's a bunch of kids fighting each other with keyboards, so I probably won't be going back to this discussion and replying to people. I just wanted to give you some advice I've been using since I first started trading back in 2012. Good luck on your hat collecting journey!
