it depends entirely on your cpu, i prefer mat_phong 0 for the looks, but mat_phong 1 gives me better performance

i think they are lol
with it set to 1 there'll be shiny ubers & shiny lights on festive weapons etc etc
with 0 it wont be

mat_phong 0 looks better (IMO) and provides a higher framerate since it doesn't have to render plasticy shines all over everything including cotton clothing which doesn't shine at all IRL.

Just use r_rimlight 0
Setting mat_phong to 0 will screw up how certain items like Australiums and the Spycicle look.
Honestly, unless you're playing on an office computer from 2003, it won't make that much of a performance difference.
