This summer paint prices for some reason recieved a spike, so whatever paints you want to buy, buy them before the prices fluctuate even harder. Or if you're a betting man, wait for a price drop...
This, keys for the most part have been the most stable type of TF2 currency any newbie can invest in, although there used to be a time where it was Bill's Hats and Ipod Earbuds, lol.
You can always go to backpack.tf, go to the listings of a cosmetic item and see its prices with various paints. You only have to pay a fraction of the paint (depending on the seller) and if you are lucky you can find a cosmetic which has a very good selling paint for very cheap. For example, I had bought a Texas Ten Gallon painted black (worth 2.7 keys according to bp.tf) for its ORIGINAL price and made 20 ref profit out of it. One other time, I had bought a full pink pyro set and made 20-22 ref profit on EACH item, which easily gave me 1.5 keys. If you are smart and patient, you can buy paints for a very good price. Just my two cents.
