Team Fortress 2
Why are they fighting the gravel wars?
As the games events are during the later 1960s, I wondered why this game takes place in the deserts of New Mexico but not the jungles of Vietnam. Because as this is the late 1960s in the US. The Vietnam War was raging, and as you know there was a draft. So why weren't the TF2 Mercenaries drafted to fight in Vietnam? They are combatants and all of them were eligible for the draft.

Abraham Lincoln didn't invent rocket jumping, he invented the stairs. BECAUSE he sucked at rocket jumping.

Or where a kid in a hotdog suit, a lead-poisoned naked patriot slathered in honey, and a schizo in a latex suit bested a grizzly bear in the arctic

Because these mercenaries are fighting for two brothers in war to control their properties, not for any country

because RED, BLU and Mannco protected them from the draft. Ez.

Dude I’m not even sure if Nam even happens in this universe. Lincoln, Tesla, Stonewall Jackson, and some other late 19th century historical figures were all the original mercenaries. Australia is a hyper-advanced utopia (due to some magical element) where all the people have mustaches and fight kangaroos. New Zealand is sunken under the ocean.
I seriously don’t think historical context matters for this game. Even if it did, the mercenaries are criminals, and could probably avoid the draft to keep working for their slow ass employers.

mercenaries are no fit for a life in society, including military service. they simply avoided the authorities and fought in private, uninhabited lands after being hired. no damn given about the draft there.

design-wise valve focused on secret facilities and tech as well as generally silly stuff. sounds good enough on its own, no necessity to fit vietnam inbetween.

The TF2 characters are mercenaries with unrealistic weapons, recruted by construction companies. They're not soldiers of the US army.
