I seriously don’t think historical context matters for this game. Even if it did, the mercenaries are criminals, and could probably avoid the draft to keep working for their slow ass employers.
design-wise valve focused on secret facilities and tech as well as generally silly stuff. sounds good enough on its own, no necessity to fit vietnam inbetween.
