Team Fortress 2
Forgotten Truth: "John Cook and Robin Walker Don’t Give a F***"...
[TL;DR] I found a forgotten essay written by someone unknown on Reddit talking about how Robin and John never cared for TF2 but it ended up a success anyway because deep down, it's an extremely profound game, and I thought I'd share it to see how others feel.

I was exploring the net when I came across a Reddit post from a few years back. Hardly anyone seems to have noticed it, and those that did don't seem to understand OP's point, but I felt compelled to share it because despite it's negative and cynical perspective (and debatable stance) there's actually some VERY profound pockets of truth in it. Here are a few sections that stood out:

"[TF2] was this haphazardly thrown together interactive Pixar cartoon but directed by Stanley ♥♥♥♥ing Kubrick. It played like a complimentary hotel PS2 game on the hotel’s own network, with the only two groups on being dumb squeaky kids who can’t understand the game or adults who for some reason have taken an obsession with this ♥♥♥♥-show and created a meta-society within it complete with a social hierarchy and cultural memes."

"The lore of the game itself is ♥♥♥♥ing patchwork in comparison to the plot of the original Super Mario Bros, and yet somehow it works. It’s insightful, it provides social commentary, its absurdist humor is genuinely philosophically deep at times. In the comics there are honestly pretty emotional scenes between characters that don’t feel forced at all. Everything we need to know is communicated through subtle hints, body language, facial expressions, not exposition dumps. The whole WAR arc itself where BLU Soldier and RED Demoman form a friendship that is beautiful and pure, but is torn apart by those who wish to abuse their skill for the sake of power and war. When Soldier and Demoman are friends, they create cherished memories and happiness. When they are enemies, they are perfect soldiers."

"The conflict itself is not for some grand good vs evil plan, these two groups of mercs are killing each other in this endless cycle of violence for the sake of ♥♥♥♥ing gravel."

"Rocket jumping was invented before stairs."

"Nothing makes any ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sense, and it’s amazing."

"Because it’s not forced, like Cayde-6 in Destiny 2. It’s not overextended, like Call of Duty. It’s not overly ambitious, like Battlefield. Its in-game market is sensible and doesn’t force you through a pay-wall, unlike the new Star Wars Battlefront."

"Because it’s genuinely random, complete, smart, and it ain’t cheap."

"The ideal state of the game is when these stereotypical characters and their archetypes are exploited to the nth degree, throwing caution to the wind and finding avenues of attack that you were never meant to enter but you do anyways."

"That’s when TF2 shines."

"In order to play TF2 and get something out of it, you need to not give a flying frickity frack ♥♥♥♥ about what even the hell is going on. ♥♥♥♥ my k/d, Imma push the cart for once. ♥♥♥♥ my comfort zone, Imma play different for once. ♥♥♥♥ gravity, I’m gonna fly around the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ map and not touch the floor the whole match."

"TF2 doesn’t reward k/d. It doesn’t reward straight up ♥♥♥♥ing points. It rewards thinking, planning, adapting, moving on, it rewards completing the objective, and that makes it so much more fun than so many other more pretty, more popular games out there. Because despite having a stupid ♥♥♥♥ing backstory with no clear good or bad guy and no real justification to the conflict, we love the characters and the lore. Because the maps are so simplistic but the classes aren’t. Because the game is such a blank slate for more creative minds to work off of. Because so much of the fun of TF2 doesn’t come from the game itself, it comes from the players."

"This is a testament to how the developers knew what the ♥♥♥♥ they were doing with videogames. They knew it so well, they didn’t even have to try, and they’d still make millions. People that are just so good at what they do that there is no way they could possibly fail."

"Don’t hunt down the free man. Become him yourself."

Figured out what this is, and it ain't about them not caring about the game. It's just them not giving a frickity ♥♥♥♥ about the game compared to other FPS games
