Team Fortress 2

Old 2007 effects.
Throughout TF2's extreme optimisation changes that would allow it to run smoother on many different types of computers, several effects were removed. Now I am not talking about unusual effects (read the title,) but I am instead talking about graphical effects in the original version of the game from 2007. Now, I know I can re-activate the cell-shaded look it originally had by typing mat_phong 0 in the console. But I am talking about very specific details. Such as the grenade launcer showing actuall grenades in the weapon's viewmodel (same thing goes with the stock revolver showing actuall bullets in the gun) as well little effects for maps such as smoke clouds surrounding missiles and covering the floor, and the 3D ripple effect in the water when the water was shot. Or the original weapon effects for the syringe gun and revolver, where the chamber of both guns rotated when they were fired. Adding a bit more realism to the game. Now, I personally think that valve could bring a lot of these effects back into TF2. Maybe add an option to turn these effects on or off. What do you all think?

They removed those shiny effects/designs to compensate for cosmetics and other related stuff that would eat at FPS.

Yes, that does make some sense that in order to add things they would have to remove things to make them fit.

To be honest, less realism fits the game more.

The models are already nonphotorealistic as it is, the textures look like they have paintbrush strokes on them.

To be honest, I agree. The game never was meant to be realistic. But at the same time, why did they remove the cell shading and make it a command that no one would know existed unless they watched that one video from STAR_? It never made sense.
