Encouraging Valve into action on abusive bots
Today an article appeared on Engadget that "Call of Duty developer will further crack down on racist players". I have just used Engadget's contact form to send the following message. I'd encourage anyone who thinks that this approach has merit to contact any other similar games or tech blogs to do something similar. It may make a difference and get the problem highlighted and addressed. Which I think is we all want.

I saw the article today on "Call of Duty developer will further crack down on racist players" and would like to bring your attention to the ongoing problem of abusive and racist behaviour in TF2.

TF2 is possibly one of the most popular, long established multi-player FPS games online, and for a long, long time players have had to suffer from the constant appearance of bots spewing hate and abuse in the chat system. The forum linked to above is filled with complaints about this, and pleas for Valve to do something to address the problem by revamping the kick-voting, reporting and banning systems in place as these are clearly ineffective. These pleas are met with silence and inaction.

TF2 is probably not the only game to be suffering in this way. Whereas it is heartening to see that the CoD developers are taking positive steps to address this, how about an article that talks about which developers are *not* taking positive action to prevent hate and abuse from their own products.

In the present climate of "Your combined silence makes you part of the problem", I believe this would make a news-worthy editorial.

I think going outside the Steam forums to get this publicized is a good idea and more likely to result in positive change than wasting time making a thousand threads here. I've messaged engaget as well and encourage everyone else to do the same, which should only take a few minutes. Negative publicity might actually work.

this
it's pretty much impossible that valve isnt aware of the current bot situation

unless it becomes some kind of pr problem that puts them in bad light they wont do anything

that did ultimately solve the issue of the source code leak incident, no reason it shouldnt happen here.

if someone saying a mean racist word hurts your feelings to the point where you don't want to play the game anymore i seriously want in on your first world problems

Setting aside the fact its a violation of the TOS, gamers get enough ♥♥♥♥ from mainstream media as it is, so if we want to-you know-prove we arent scumbag basement dwellers it shouldnt be too much to ask that we avoid giving idiots reason to believe we are...

Only that'll probably only result in something being done half assed! Remember when they had to rush to "patch" out the previous heavy health exploit two years ago if I'm correct only for it to resurface again because it wasn't patched out properly.
