Team Fortress 2

"wE sHOuLd jUSt LeT tHE CoMMunITy mAKe uPDaTEs fOr tF2!!!"
This idealistic, airheaded idea needs to be challenged already. The people spouting this have correctly identified that Valve does nothing for TF2 anymore and just automatically assumes the community would do better. We know they won't, we have history to go on.

Remember the invasion update? That entire thing was the official devs letting some prominent community members spearhead a major update, and they failed. They let it devolve into stupid, self centered arguing about who gets more credit and proceeds. And these people were considered the biggest independent content creators for TF2.

What about the source code leaks that happened literally yesterday. Are you telling me that these are the people you trust the game to? A bunch of independent devs who don't think before they act and let irrelevant internal conflicts take precedent over actually working on the game? I'd rather have 3 more years of nothing than risk giving the reigns to TF2 over to people like that.

The community has no place deciding the direction of the game. The same people who think that the Phlog is OP because they just stood there and let a Pyro build up crit charge with his flares. The same people who don't votekick their aimbots. The same people who have no idea how to properly balance the game at all and can only complain about how it looks now next to some idealistic state that it could be in.

It could be a decade before Valve gets the sense to start working on TF2 related things again but I'd rather wait than trust anyone in this insane blanket term of "The community" With the direction of the game.

Yet you got communities like Creators.tf making big moves in the development scene. You literally made a whole post trying to discourage wannabe coders and developers from updating a classic.

tl;dr - valve already gave the community multiple chances, most if not all the community events were a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ behind the scenes, we cannot be trusted to make official updates

Nope. Didn't suggest that at all. I just don't want OFFICIAL TF2 development and the level of authority that comes with it to be put in the hands of a bunch of amateurs. I have no problem with community work being recognised.

Yes. Official being the key word here. Just look at the code leak that happened yesterday. Actual danger or complete false alarm, it doesn't matter. What matters is the sheer level of incompetence and unprofessionalism being shown by the community when it comes to development. These were people who weren't even in charge of the games development who did something that could have ♥♥♥♥♥♥ us all over.
Damn u used big words that ♥♥♥♥ was scary ahaha.
Anyways yall eat chalk as A kid?

I don't feel that's entirely true when it comes to Valve, they've always been top of their class when they really try to do something (Don't look at Artifact please).

Valve has kind of already given rights to the game over to the people making all of the aimbots and releasing them upon the game. Sure, you may get lucky and not come across them every session but they're there. I suppose the whole "give the game to the community" thing comes from our desperate want to treat TF2 better than Valve is. Our loathe of seeing that the parent company has absolutely no pride or want to defend it's product from attacks. Granted, it is true that we probably wouldn't do much better of a job as we aren't an organized company like Valve though. It won't stop us fantasizing about it though. In the end all we can do is accept that Valve, as a company, is going to behave like a company and invest itself in what is financially lucrative and will benefit the longevity of their business. And right now, even leaving TF2 in it's sorry state, Valve is still making money hand over fist off of our economy and trading scene. To them we're basically a broken money press, except somehow and someway we are still printing money for them. I know I've kinda been back and forth with my points but I've been up all night and wrote this because i was hopelessly bored and felt like dropping this in here with the rest of the crazy mix of replies

Team Fortress was a mod
Left 4 Dead was a mod
Counter Strike was a mod
Heck even Portal was actually an indie game at first

Yes, but that was back when people actually didn't have access to scripts (not this much I mean), and only people who actually KNEW about this worked on this type of projects.

Nowadays there's so much braindead out there with the very basics (or not even that), who know how to copy and paste a few commands and think they're programmers.

I'm afraid times have changed, and right now, I wouldn't risk having the entire source code of the game in the hands of the Community.

you. i like you.

let's go further and remind that the tf team actually play(ed) their game, so they're a part of the community as well. if anything, these guys' decision making could be just as bad as anyone since they're lambda players besides their dev status.

exactly. also, that ideology is shared by the same brainlets who think that tf2 needs bi-yearly major updates to stay alive, and it seriously needs to stop

So 2 updates a year isn't enough?
