disconnect: bad challenge

sometimes when i get into a matchmaking server, it just disconnects me with the message "disconnect: bad challenge" as soon as it starts to join the game. what's the cause of this? all previous posts about this are from 2012/2014, so i have no idea what to do.

Not sure, I usually get that when I try to join a community server through Steam's server browser (not in-game)
