4GB RAM no longer good enough?
A few weeks back I had to set back to my older PC that I got in ~2010 which I first started TF2 on (my alt account) and it always ran fine with high graphics settings

Increasingly, there are times when the game stutters badly a lot and on two occasions the game has been forced to close because of not enough memory

Does anyone still play this with 4GB RAM? Are there ways to ease the games RAM usage without just turning down the main graphics settings?

EDIT: I am also currently using a soundmod in tf>custom>my_custom_stuff - could that cause RAM issues?

For me, during the MvM matches, it doesn't really take more than ~1gb of RAM and almost 2 full CPU cores. Guess Valve done their optimizations run. And I don't have my RAM locked or anything. I have 16gbs.

RAM? nah. TF2 is more a CPU based game.

Unlike all those RAM based games that run on RAM.

I play with only 4GB of RAM. I use custom launch options with textures and models on high while the rest is set to low or off. I only experience heavy stutters at the start of a round, then when I run into "out of memory" crashes, I delete and re-validate TF2's sound cache files.

Yeah, like GTAV for example that had alot of users in tears because its ram usage stacked itself.

This might be why it's been extreme recently - I forgot I put a soundmod in tf>custom>my_custom_stuff files of the game and it usually works, however I believe it can be slightly glitchy. I wonder if there's a way to to check whether a custom sound file can cause issues with the game? Or will re-validating the game will affect any of the stuff in that file? Do you just delete the tf>sound file and re-validate?

Will add if custom stuff can cause this in orig post, thanks a lot

Actually, i do remember having a problem with too many sound files slowing the game myself, but im not sure wether or not one mod will do the trick.

Oops, I meant I'm using "set launch options" commands through the game's Steam properties. I don't have any mods. By "validate" I also meant verifying the game's files. Still though...
  1. If you know what your soundmod replaces, you can trigger it to see if it causes any issues.
  2. Verifying will only check the game files, it won't mess around with any of your custom stuff.
  3. Delete the sound cache file in tf\sound. Then open Steam, go to your Library, right click TF2, chose Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game files. It'll take a few minutes.
