Why does tf2 run so bad?
Tf2 at minimum settings runs worse than most games do at good settings. I play tf2 at the lowest settings at 1080p and get around 40fps with frame drops at some points. I play overwatch at ultra settings and get a constant 100fps. Valve what the heck why do your games run like trash

Definitely don't post your specs. That would be stupid.

csgo and tf2 still shouldn't be running so bad compared to newer games tho. csgo and tf2 barely run while I can play the new modern warfare at 60fps with decent settings

It's a CPU based game.

One of the main performance problems with TF2 is that it has 24 players. That absolutely murders the CPU. If you tried to stuff 24 players on a COD map the performance would tank too. In CSGO I get over 200 FPS in 5v5 games, but only get 90-100 in 10v10 casual. If you play 6v6 competitive in TF2 you will get much higher framerates than in 12v12 casual too.

You should still be able to get close to 100 FPS though. I use -dxlevel 81, but every now and again when I switch back to 91 I am still able to get 70+ FPS with a 4690, 970, and 8GB RAM.

After the jungle inferno update the game's optimization is dead right now lol

Try Direct x 9.5/9.8, one will run awfully and the other will run phenomenally.

While this is an old thread I'd like to tell you why, you know Source the engine that both CS:GO and TF2 run on is terribly optimized for multiplayer and TF2 being terribly optimized itself doesn't help, and a lot of the code in TF2 and CS:GO and Source in general is stuff from the GoldSRC and Quake II days, GoldSRC being based upon the Quake II engine, and that leads me to my next point GoldSRC and Source are very CPU reliant especially in a multiplayer setting as Source leaves a lot to the CPU when it comes to multiplayer stuff, Left 4 Dead 2's version fixes that issue fairly well and is what Source 2 is based upon, and Sham was right it all comes down to optimization which the TF2 devs never bothered doing, which the reason I brought up GoldSRC is because it's the main reason why Source is terribly optimized and hard to work with (and caused the TF2 devs to have a mental break down over the code) and particles + Source don't mix (except again with Left 4 Dead 2) as Source's way with dealing with them is just down right bad it was a patch job that they used to get them to work in Half-Life 2 and they finally fixed it in Left 4 Dead 2.
