Care to elaborate on what the loud sound is? This could mean many things, so please give us as much information you can. While I'm here, have you:

Verified game files?
Installed custom content?
Altered any game files?
Exited/re-entered Steam?
Restarted your computer?

you can also make the pitch of the sound change based on how much damage you are doing.

this can be useful to judge how close you are to an enemy as well, since almost all weapons' damage scales with falloff. it lets you judge if an enemy is moving towards you or away from you with your ears if you are damaging them regularly
