If you've never played L4D2 it's a great game to play co-op though. I never got into the PvP side of it and I've heard it's pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥, but massacring zombies with a friend is pretty fun.
I've generally heard people complaining that the remaining community takes it rather seriously. But who knows, people probably say the same thing about TF2.
Co-Op is indeed fun. As for PvP there? Something I'll never touch at all because I've heard people can be pretty toxic and annoying (well toxicity is normal for online multiplayer games).
You only need to buy/own L4D2. People got Bill's Hat if they pre-purchased the game before November 17, 2009.
You can still get the Frying Pan, but there's no way to get Bill's Hat (only option is to get it by trading).
