Auto balance is a meme and should always be in tf2.
All it does is try to keep team sizes even. Unbalanced matches are still a problem outside of that though. For starters, games still become unbalanced in the first place, and more often then not can become unbalanced several times in a single round.
The problem though is that during the time the game is unbalanced, the team with more people starts to gain momentum. So that when the auto-balance finally kicks in, it's already pretty much a full fledge steam roll by that point. Meaning the game is pretty much over / unfun even if auto-balance manages to balance teams before the game is over.
Face it, autobalance is a necessary evil if we don't want Casual to be an even bigger roll-fest than it already is. I, personally, would even be in favor of going a step further and bringing back team scramble too. Why did they ever get rid of that, anyway?
Autobalance is a crap way to balance your team. Mainly because its almost entirely random. It pretty much reduces incentive to actually play properly since you've spent 5 minutes trying to achieve the objective and *bam* the game gives you a fat middle finger and flips you over to ♥♥♥♥ you with humiliation.
I'd say keep autobalance, but not in the current "mechanic"
Instead of just punishing a single player, you should actually balance the match so that both teams have a chance.
Autobalance around half the team more or less and switch around accordingly.
Punish frequent leavers by giving them match penalties for consistent leaving or increasing chances for being autobalanced.
Improve overall matchmaking so players have incentive to play competitive mode which has scarce players and several cheaters.
Reimplement stopwatch mode but increase the numbers of rounds to 4 rounds each, including team scramble.
I never said autobalance was perfect in its current form, mate. We could definitely do with a lot less getting autobalanced seconds before the end of a match, breaking up queue parties, and autobalancing low-scoring players for no reason, which won't really help anyone. But I firmly believe it is a necessary mechanic and that a Casual Mode without autobalance, or at least automatic team scrambling on rolls, is a worse Casual than what we have now.
This isn't even including the fact that you now get balanced while alive which screws over Engineers and Medics heavily.
